Evolution Is Just A Theory

I got an email earlier today from someone called Alexander. Though he didn't say in the email i get the impression Alexander is a christian who doesn't believe in evolution.
I read a blog post you made about DNA and how we share some DNA with monkeys and you use this as evidence that we evolved from monkeys. I think it should be pointed out to you that if i have an orange car and an orange house just because they are both orange dont mean they are related. Evolution is just a theory it isnt a fact and because its not a fact it cant be science, its just another form of religion.

Alexander makes the mistake commonly made by anti-evolutionists. That mistake is he hasn't got a fucking clue what he is talking about. Let's look at the points Alexander makes and systematically kick them to death.

I read a blog post you made about DNA and how we share some DNA with monkeys and you use this as evidence that we evolved from monkeys.

No, I didn't say we evolved from monkeys in that post. I said ourselves and chimpanzees share a common ancestor. I don't know if you understand the difference between "evolved form" and "share a common ancestor with", So if you don't let me know and I'll go further into it and explain the difference.

I think it should be pointed out to you that if i have an orange car and an orange house just because they are both orange dont mean they are related.

The similarity of our genetics is not what is being used as the evidence of shared ancestry. What is being used is the insertions of IRV DNA, Junk DNA, At exactly the same locations in both genomes, Something which can only realistically happen if ourselves and chimps were the same species at the time of infection.

Evolution is just a theory it isnt a fact and because its not a fact it cant be science, its just another form of religion

Ah the old "evolution is just a theory" chestnut. Evolution is a fact, it's an observable, demonstrable heavily supported fact. The theory of evolution is an explanation of that fact. Just like gravity, tides and knots are facts and gravitational theory, Knot theory and tide theory are explanations of those facts.

As for it being a religion. it's pretty stupid of the religious to try and ridicule evolution by claiming it's a "religion". An atheist could never use the claim that "religion is just science" when criticising it, Which i think says volumes about how even the religious see their belief. Even the religious see it as being dumb, unsupported mythology, why else would they say evolution is a religion if being a religion didn't automatically make something stupid?

it is a scientific theory backed up by empricial evidence (facts). it is not the kind of theory used by everyday people to describe a suspicion (without evidence).

    Hahahaha! Priceless response.

Also a mistake typical of the creationist mindset.

    Thanks for the chuckle!

Oh man, I wish I'd thought of that line of reasoning.

  4. May I make a few observations, by which I mean hold the observations down while you kick them?

You could make the orange point that he's talking about phenotypes and you are talking about genotypes...yadda yadda blah. Secondly, he actually uses religion in a diminutive, dismissive manner which, let's face it, religion deserves. It doesn't say much for the regard he holds for religion, is what I'm saying. Anyway, I think I'm having a stroke right now since my post doesn't make any sense...and geolrdf dssanlke kernwiocoi tsddf

OK, now I have lost the concept of "on the left."

Typing with my remaining functional arm,

I'd never really looked at it like that. Bloody good point, well made!

  7. What empirical facts are there for evolution>? It's a theory that man are failing at explaining but brainwashing people into having faith in it... it is a religion; religion is defined as a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. Christians know their faith is true because of the Bible and we know the Bible is true cause it came from God; Jesus is God and that's why His death marked the B.C. A.D. part in history... yous will probably be ignorant of this comment because im not studying science for the rest of my life... but everyone needs to know the good news

  8. Wow, Peter. Have you been sleeping under a rock your whole life? Empirical facts surround us. Evolution is happening before our very eyes. I was brainwashed by religion at a young age, but no one ever tried to brainwash me in the belief of evolution, the facts were just there. Why does the African Elephant have smaller tusks now than 100 years ago? In the thousands of years of human history, why was the first reported case of AIDS from HIV just a few decades ago? Why is there so much more diversity of canines in captivity than in the wild? I could go on for hours with questions that cannot be answered with the Book of Genesis theory but fall right in line with evolutionary theory. Christians think their faith is true because they were indoctrinated (or brainwashed) as a child with the idea that the Bible is the infallible word of God. Spend enough time reading your Bible and you'll see just how infallible it is. I won awards as a child for my monumental knowledge of the Bible in trivia contests and scripture memorization clubs, so I know the flaws well. Just because the calender was altered to favour Christianity doesn't make Christianity more true; just makes it more confusing with Sept(root meaning seven)ember being the 9th month, Oct(root meaning eight)ober being the 10th month, et cetera. We could start counting up years at any arbitrary point in history, we could have BJ (before Josh) and AJ (after Josh) to signify my life, doesn't mean I'm god nor would I ever claim to be.

What "good news" does god bring? I was named after an Israelite that was responsible for a worse genocide than Hitler because god promised them a chunk of land (which he still has yet to hold up that promise, real omnipotent). Is the "good news" that you will continue to insult people that don't worship the same imaginary friend as you? Guess what my "good news" is! I will continue to laugh at your ignorance while you laugh at mine and nothing is ever going to change either of our opinions. Little word of advice though, I don't walk into a church or go to a religious website and start spreading my "good news", that's called respect. Now can you kindly respect us enough to spot polluting our community with your "good news" (2000 years old, is not news anyway)?

  9. omfg, best site ever. With the comments and all. I'm having crying and laughing at the same time.
I'm just very fed-up with the religious view, it's like trying to teach a cat to skateboard.
The thing is, that their world-view and reality is based on the bible so it scares them that there's now a bigger opponent to tackel aka evolution.

Keep up the good work. And thank you.

Ps. you might want to remove the scientology ad from your adsense. :)
