Christians Oppose Anti-Hate Law

Jack Straw this week outlined plans to introduce new laws protecting people from "hate" based on their sexuality or perceived sexuality.

Under the proposal it would be considered a crime to incite hatred against homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and heterosexual people. Mr Straw said: “It is a measure of how far we have come as a society in the past ten years that we are now appalled by hatred and invective directed at people on the basis of their sexuality. It is time for the law to recognise this.”

So naturally the only people in modern England to oppose these new anti-hate laws are the Christians. Christians believe these new anti-hate laws could be used against them. Which is a bit like a Nazi saying anti-racism laws could be used against them. Yeah, That's kind of the point, The laws are to stop you using someones sexuality as a tool of hate.

Colin Hart, director of the conservative evangelical Christian Institute, said: “In a democratic society people must be free to express their beliefs without fear of censure. A homophobic hatred law would be used by those with an axe to grind against Christians to silence them. There have already been high-profile cases of the police interfering with free speech and religious liberty regarding sexual ethics. People shouldn’t face prison for expressing their sincerely held religious beliefs.”

No, Colin. What people have to realise is that just because they believe something, No matter how sincerely, it doesn't give them a right to say it. So stop hiding behind your "belief" as an excuse or reason for spouting venomous hate towards anybody you disagree with.

And let's be honest, Christians are usually the first ones to hide behind censorship as a way of stopping the rest of us doing, Seeing, saying or reading something that they disagree with. Remember their attempt to ban Harry Potter on the grounds of satanic messages?

I have to disagree with you on this one. This is a very slippery slope you are playing upon. Such speech-limiting laws would backfire in the USA. Xians would use them to their advantage in silencing atheists and other free-thinkers. While the typical homophobic xian is a vile hate-filled creature there are better ways to silence them.

  2. I disagree with the hate law, because I disagree with all hate laws. I'm bisexual I don't agree with it. I am also a christian. Yes many of my fellow brethern are very scared of Harry Potter, but that is due to a wide variety of socio-cultural reasons.
By the way if someone believes something they have the right to say it. No matter how hateful it is. If someone called me a faggy sand nigger going to hell (I'm Indian by the way), I would respond ok I'll bring the beer you bring the whores (or virgins).
People are too senstive about words. When words incite riots, then we restrict. Even the sumpreme court agrees with that one. If they just say Gays should die according to Leviticus (which is theologically flawed, and logically flawed), they have the right to say it. As long as they don't act on it. That is their constitutional rights.
On censorship, yes many of my brethern are hypocrites. I'm not, I am strongly against it. Free speech is free speech, and God almighty gave us free choice.

  3. THANK YOU! Hate should never be protected. The whole "Christians are such a persecuted sect" doesn't resonate with me.

I do believe in free speech, but I also believe in children not having to endure torment all through school, and people not being murdered or otherwise assaulted for being who they are. We wouldn't tolerate this if it were racism (well, the decent of us), so we shouldn't tolerate homophobia.
I just found your blog today, via Digg.

  4. rohan... I am terribly confused. In your post, you say that god gave you free choice... Is it not your religion that in the past is well noted for oppression of free choice? There really aren't many sects of Christianity that allow full freedom of choice. Abortion, pre-marital sex, oh, and half the book of Leviticus come to mind when I think of limitations to free choice. Don't even get me started on the genocidal tendencies of catholicism. Perhaps you meant something a little different.

  5. I'd have to agree with the user "what".

"What people have to realise is that just because they believe something, No matter how sincerely, it doesn't give them a right to say it."

I don't agree with this. I think people should be free to believe and say whatever they want, regardless of how ignorant, stupid, malign, or hateful it is. I'm gay myself, but I don't think infringing on even the mere PRINCIPLE of free speech is worth preventing a few "fag"s and "homo"s being thrown around.

Let's simply educate religious bigots and homophobes instead of imposing laws which go against PARAMOUNT free-speech principles.

Anyways, cheers GBG, I still love you.

  6. I disagree. You don't understand what anti-hate laws mean. If you do, then you're hateful toward the Christians.

People in North America are too thin skinned. They usually do one of two things if they're offended. They cower in a corner and complain about how much they're hurt "poor me" type attitude. OR... they sue you for harassment.

Christians have every right to say that homosexuality is a sin. That's not hate. In fact, the bible tells us to love others. And if a person is sinning, I will tell them in love.

It is NOT cool to do what people like the Westboro Baptist people are doing. They are NOT Christians. They spew hate venom all the time and give Christians a bad name. That is NOT how we think.

Homosexuality is a sin, but so is fornication, lying, and drunkeness. For example, if I'm a boss, I'll hire a qualified homosexual or a qualified fornicator. There is no difference to me. They have every right to work and be treated with respect. But what this law is trying to do is stop me from even saying that a person's LIFESTYLE is wrong.

We are truly moving towards the way Nazi Germany was. You don't think so? Well Hitler had an amazing way of convincing people that the Jews were ruining their economy and that they need to exterminate them. This is the same in North America. The media has an amazing way of convincing people how evil and hateful the Christians are, and the next thing you know, people will want to exterminate us, and guess what?.... they will feel justified in doing so.
