The 90dayjane Hoax

If you are one of the people who have bought into this attention seeking hoax, Shame on you.

There have been tons of suicide blogs over the years and this just another in a long line. They are created by people who either need attention or are trying to find some kind of self worth in the way of strangers pleading with them to not do it.

If you have no idea what i am talking about there is a blog called 90dayjane in which a woman claims she is documenting the 90 days prior to her planned suicide. Her blog consists of day to day commentary of her life peppered with assurances that she isn't doing it for attention and full of comments by strangers pretending that they give a shit.

So how do i know it is a hoax? If you look on her blog she says;
I am going to kill myself in 90 days. What else should i say? This blog is not a cry for help or even to get attention. It's simply a public record of my last 90 days in existence. I'm not depressed and nothing extremely horrible has lead me to this decision. But, does it really have to? I mean, as an atheist I feel life has no greater purpose.
To me this stinks of a religious person trying to paint atheists as immoral, materialistic machines with no self-worth. surely an Atheists greatest purpose is to stay alive. When Atheists die that is it, There is no reunion, There is no handshake with god and there is no eternal happiness. the Atheist believes we get one life and when it's over it's over.

So logically speaking, An Atheist is far less likely to kill themselves for no reason than someone who believes death is nothing more than a transition to a better place.

  1. Agreed. I'm guessing the storyline is that someone -- perhaps this fella at work who asked her out for a Valentine's Day date -- is going to introduce her to Jesus. Reluctantly, she will realize that the Lord is her Savior, and that suicide is the Path to Hell.

  2. When I read the line about being an atheist I thought it was a religious person as well and there was going to be a fabricated story with some spiritual inspiration to live. Just because I thought it was odd for her to say that.

    But as far as an atheist being less likely to commit suicide I don't see that as logical. A depressed atheist would have to have a deeper sense of hopelessness than someone who believes in some sort of reason for their depression. I believe God challenges us and pushes us harder than we feel capable of overcoming to motivate us, teach us and force us to grow and gain insight. Additionally Christianity considers it a sin to kill yourself.

  4. However, it isn't "for no reason." The feeling of having no purpose can be a very empty feeling. If someone feels that the only purpose in life is to get up every day and do the same things over and over until one day, you die, he or she may want to just get it over with. I can identify with that feeling. I'm not saying I want to kill myself; I'm just saying that life can be boring and seem meaningless.

    FWIW: I am an Atheist. I sometimes wish that I COULD believe in some kind of afterlife, so that it would seem that there was a purpose to all of this, but I logically, I can't. Also, I do agree that her is a hoax, but I believe from personal experience that your logic is flawed.

    I find in my work with depressed and suicidal young people that religion and / or belief does not copme into it at all - why would an atheist have to have a 'deeper' sense of hopelessness than anyone else? depression depends on a lot more than world view or beliefs.
